There were the very rich and wealthy people, and there were the very poor and poverty-stricken people, a middle class had not really been set up at this point in time. The poor had little to hope for and their hire in life was beyond their control. A dream world was a way for them to escape the sorrows of their lives, perhaps the only way for many .
